Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is one of the most interesting examples of these WWI periscopes we have offered. It likely saw use during World War I, and then post-war was stenciled with the Art Deco-Styled Lettering Logo of Rival Shoes, a popular shoe company in the late 1910s & 1920s. They began using this style of lettering in 1917, so this stenciling dates between then and the 1930s. This was likely done directly after the war for a victory parade in 1918-1919, however.

This trench periscope is an authentic and invaluable tool from the First World War, which played an essential role in trench warfare. It has been prudently preserved and has retained most of its original olive drab green paint. The periscope is accompanied by its original adjustable leg and belt clip, which are equally well-preserved.

The periscope is an optical device that employs two opposing glass mirrors, one at the top and one at the bottom, held in a wooden case that is secured by twisted wire. Although its design is fairly basic, it was a cost-effective and efficient tool that could be mass-produced during its time. The utilization of this device was instrumental in various fields, and its simple construction allowed for widespread use.

The periscope appears to be in wonderful condition, with the mirrors exhibiting great shape, albeit with some scratches, dust and dirt accumulation. The wooden housing has some expected wear and chipping, indicating that it is an item of significant age that saw solid field use. The length of the periscope measures just above 14 inches, making it a desirable item for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Along one side of the periscope in red stenciled letters reads RIVAL SHOES which was a company selling shoes in Pennsylvania and New York during and after World War I, and they likely used this for a victory parade display.

This is a rare and genuine example from the Great War used post-war by a Shoe Company with a very attractive stenciling that is ready to be displayed or even used. Don’t miss out on this very unique piece.
